Angry killing fire ants without killing squirrels

I have three babies in a cage that are ready to start weaning. My problem is when I put food out the fire ants get to it before the babies do. I need something that will kill the ants but not the babies. They are still in a transistion cage and are not on the ground yet. Any body have any suggestions? I looked on the web but didn't see anything that I could use safely. I usually have the black (non biting ants) but have not had fire ants to this degree around the cage. I live in Florida and have always had to deal with them, but not in my cage like this. They will be in the transistion cage a few more weeks but after that they will be free to roam the large cage and I don't want to risk hurting them with poison. I've sprayed soap water and they just laughed at that.

From Missdolittle: Sorry Im late, you can put the food bowl in a larger bowl with water in it that way the ants will not get to the food

Thanks Bear!

I'm back now, I hope!

I do this for all animals out there, placing a bowl within a bowl and fill the outer one with water. I've tried everything non-poison that I could find and was recommended to me to fight off ants, nothing worked.

For the climbing critters I like to use the hanging bowls, which makes it even harder for the ants to get to.

I hope that helps!
