It is wonderful to find this forum!
I'm a middle-aged woman from the Midwest US, trying to keep an infant squirrel alive (grey squirrel, I think). He was slingshotted out of a large pine last Wednesday during a powerful windstorm, and when his mother did not return for him by dusk, I brought him inside.
Our only local wildlife rehab organization closed several weeks ago. If the squirrel was surrendered to the DNR, he'd be destroyed. He's fiesty and strong, so it would be nice for him to have a fighting chance--my goal is to keep him alive until I can find another rehab option, or until he's old enough to try and reaclimate to the outide world.
He's still alive a week later, but I don't feel much more confident with his care than on Day 1. I mean, I'm a reasonably observant tool-using mammal, in my past I worked for a lot of years for a veterinarian, and I've raised orphaned kittens before, so I think I have a little piece of general clue. But this squirrel care thing is a whole different ball game. Or at last it feels that way.
So it sure is nice to find you folks and make your acquaintance!!
