Default Larry our first Opossum rescue of the year

New Opossum Larry has been added to the family: Larry was brought to us by the local animal control officer. He was found caught in a garbage compost of a local resident. Upon initial examination we found he was very very dehydrated and disorientated. At first we believed the poor guy could have distemper but upon further evaluation we believe it is not true.

What do you think is wrong with him? He certainly isn't a baby that couldn't fend for himself? I never had to deal with adult opossums, except 2 unreleasable ones I had for a year, but since I raised them they were anything but wild.

This is Stan and Ollie...brothers from the same litter. One stayed a dwarf and the other had only 3 legs but 4 feet and had a very crooked spine. The small one escaped after he turned a year old, and a week later, Ollie just passed away in his sleep.

We believe there is a possible distemper issue with him. We are waiting a couple days then going to take blood test on him. I know his back left leg was fractured from the compost cover. There is a light splint i put on him which lert me tell you wasn't easy. Tomorrow I will be taking blood samples though so hopefully will find out more

When we recieved him so to speak he was severely dehydrated and malnutruished. In only 48 hours he has mad a great recovery. The pics above are as of tonight 2-9-2008. I'll keep you updated about the blood test.

If his blood test come back normal I'll hit him up with some vaccines hold for a week to evaluate reactions and a chipp probally then schedule a release site.

He sure looks like he has an attitude, which is good for him, not so much for you, lol. I bet it was tough getting the splint on it. That is my biggesst weakness as a rehabber. I can't stand the thought of broken bones, it just grosses me out, and I am horrible at wrapping. I had a little bunny that I needed to wrap this past season and it took me two tries and someone else holding him before I got it right, and he was only about a week old. Good luck with the little guy, I hope his blood test comes back ok.

Well guys unfortunantly Larry has passed on us. From the Blood test Larry had distemper and it ate away at him. It trully upsets me because he could have been on of the Opossums we had last spring and we couldn't afford vaccinating and microchipping them. Hopefully this spring we will be able to I believe it will drastically help.

If you want to see anymore pictures of larry he is listed on our home page under memorial. Thank you again.

Oh just to add because I have gotten emails about the cage Larry was in. We have 3 of these cages and they are specifically used to coorantine the animals away from other animals until we recieve blood tests on them. So to anyone that has a question on that that is why he is in such a small cage. Last thing we want is for disease to get spread.

Aaw dangit! What a shame!

But let me take advantage of the situation and ask you for the exact symptoms he displayed? I never encountered distemper and I rather hear it from somebody who's been through it than read it in a book. I'd appreciate it.

MissD,

With coons it is a lot easier to see the tell tell signs. With Opossums it is a little harder because their main defense mechanism is to open mouth and play dead, but here are a couple things that may help. They will have a kinda drunkagness appearance IE eyes glazzed and stagger. Might not stagger much but they will. They may also have a kinda of twitching complex again hard to see but if you take your time a watch you will see. It gets challenging because they will eat and drink regular. If anyone comes into this type of situation and can video. I would be glad to assist watch the clip and give you my recomendation. In the end though you can not be sure until you get blood test which can get expensive.
