Default New Members are moderated from now on!

Due to more and more spammers thinking this is a cool place to leave their cheap links, I will from now on double check new registrations before they are allowed to post.

So if you are a spammer, don't even bother.

Real registrations should be approved within the hour.

Good idea Ms. D!

So is it like IP.Board where when they post you have to approve the posts too?

I have no clue LOL! I just clicked moderate new users and we'll see what happens. My guess is that I'll get an email when a new user registers, which I get anyways, but they can't post until I change their status I suppose.

Most of the time it's obvious that it's a spammer, because they have random email addresses and nicks that a real user wouldn't use..and they have of course spam websites in the signature and profile. Some try to add that later, but one alarm bell or the other usually goes off.

I delete about ten a day before they even get to post. But I'm getting tired of those races.

My only concern was people that might have an emergency..but I'm checking email every few minutes, it shouldn't take long before somebody is approved.

I think it is an awesome idea! It annoys me to have postings that are offensive or of absolute no value to the point. More work on you but so happy you are doing it!

I had to re-do this entire approach, because it did interfere with the emergencies. From now on, I move everybody who posted a few decent valid posts into a new usergroup called "Regular Users".

The "Registered Users", which everybody is that validates their registration per email, will not have Signature, Avatar, Membership List, BBcode and other certain privileges that spammers prefer.

Once I see that the user is sincere and is not a spammer, I'll move them to the new Usergroup where all these privileges are granted.

I also color-coded the nicks by Usergroup as follows:

Red and italic: Regular Users with basic plus privileges
Orange: Registered Users (new users yet to be determined if spammer or not)
Purple: Moderator
Green: Admin

Lets see how that works LOL.

Cool, hope that works.

Also with vb you can use 'promotion' where after so many rep points or posts they are promoted to another group.

That's how I do it.

Maybe you can get the regular users to assist you with the cleaning. But on the other hand, if you can still manage it's okay then. It's very normal at some websites too.

Is that the reason why I can no longer send private messages?

Some people have turned private messaging off in their profile.

The only really regular user here is me and I'm usually always on the computer. I usually catch spammers within the hour, if I'm not asleep. It sure is a hassle, but I had much worse.

I tried a few different things with permissions and usergroups, but it all didn't work out for some reason. I have to keep trying when I have more time.

Hm, I just checked, you and I both have PM marked as allowed, but I don't see the option either when I click on your name. I have to find some time to go through all these thousands of options again.
