Default rabies ?

Hi, I just read about the skunks. How long can a baby live if they are infected with rabies? I have been asked this about my squirrel. we do have a lot of infected bats in the area, and someone brought a dead one to a local school for show and tell and now 1/2 the school needs to receive the rabies shots(about 100 kids, honest). How would rabies present in an animal, how soon until death? how contagious and how is it spread??? Thanks so much!!

You can't imagine how often I googled these questions and asked different people and sources, and each time I got to hear a different opinion, myth, or "fact". Maybe we can get to the bottom on this, right here and now!

Anybody?

Wait, just because there was a bat there they had to get rabies shots? Wow.

It amazes me how much we go overboard with rabies. I'm advocating removing a restriction on rehabbing skunks due to the potential of rabies.

Generally most animals can live an average of 14 days of quarantine before succumbing to the disease.

You do realize though that you posted this under the raccoons section?

oops on the raccoon section. Yeh the bat tested positive for rabies, and since the kids touched the dead bat, even though hand sanitizer was available, the fear that they may of come in contact with its "fluids" is so high that the school has to spend 70k on treating them. you can watch the news clip on kpax.com. I just wanted to know the risks associated with baby animals and proper pecautions. Sorry about posting in the wrong section....

I just looked up how much it costs to treat rabies since I am out in the wilderness a lot and JIC I wanted to know the exact amt of shots if you have not have preventative ones...5 shots and it runs approximately $1500, so 70G vs 150G to treat students sounds pretty dang good to me lol

Yea if you get the 3 set pre-exposure shots its cheaper...but if you don't and you get bit and have to go through the 5 series it costs about 1500. I am going to get the pre-exposure series when I get into working where I want.
