Default Mama Destiny

Destiny is a 4.5 year old shepherd mix that was dumped at our shelter on Monday night after the shelter closed. She was found in a kennel outback with another dog Tuesday morning. She is very pregnant and also heartworm postitive. Since I work with the shelter and also a rescue group we all worked together and the dog was surrendered to the rescue. So now I have her in my basement awaiting the birth of her babies. Here is a picture I took of her in her "safe place" the bathroom.

She is very timid and is learning to trust us. She is very sweet.
Can anyone tell me any signs of impending delivery of her pups? She is already filling up with milk (since she was found). I have never had a dog that had puppies before. I would really appreciate any tips.
Just about an hour ago I noticed that she was kind of shivery.

Aaaw, bless her heart, and yours too!

Nesting behavior is one sign of impending birth, like carrying towels and pushing them onto a pile and such. Most dogs stop eating a day before it starts. Pacing is another sign. That's all I can think of right now!

Good luck. Looks like he's going to have a LOT..my guess is 8-10.

Here is a long overdue update on Destiny. She delivered 10 beautiful pups on February 23rd. She lost two of the babies so she only has 8 little babies. They are all doing great. The biggest babies are 1 pound 10 oz and the smallest are between 1 pound 8 oz and 1 pound 2 oz. I will get some pictures uploaded in just a little bit.

They are all adorable! My favorite is the big mostly white girl with the black on her head and middle, the first thing I thought when I saw the pic of her was Panda.

I know this won't help you much now...but! Prior to giving birth, a dam's temp will dump from in the 100's (normal is 99 to 101.5) down to 99 or lower. Once the temp drops, birth is likely within 24 hours.
