Default Oppose Efforts to Legalize Horse Slaughter in Texas

This week, a federal court agreed that two slaughter plants in Texas are violating state law by slaughtering horses for human consumption. However, allies of the slaughter industry have introduced legislation (H.B. 2476) to repeal the state's existing ban on this barbaric practice. There are only three horse slaughter plants in the U.S. and two of them are in Texas.

Please call your state representative, Sid Miller, at (512) 463-0628 and your senator, Troy Fraser, at (512) 463-0124 and urge them to oppose H.B. 2476 and any efforts to legalize horse slaughter for human consumption.

Making a call is easy. You will most likely speak to a staff member who will take your call and pass your message to your legislators. All you have to say is:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I am calling from [your city]. I strongly oppose H.B. 2476, legislation to legalize horse slaughter in Texas. Horses hold a special place in American history and should not be slaughtered for export to France and other countries for human consumption. It's time to end this grisly practice and I hope [legislator's name] will oppose any attempts to legalize horse slaughter in our state. Thank you."

After you make your calls, click here to send a follow-up email to your state legislators opposing horse slaughter in Texas.

Each year almost 100,000 horses are slaughtered in the United States for diners in Europe and Japan. These riding, race, and carriage horses are in good condition but are bought at auction by killer buyers and transported from all over the country to Texas and Illinois for slaughter. Many were stolen and sent to auction so their former owners are often totally unaware of the pain, fear and suffering their horses endure before being slaughtered.

Please tell your friends and family in Texas about this issue. With your help, we can put an end to this barbaric practice. Thank you for taking action on this important legislation, and for all you do for animals.
